英语电影观后感

金沙贵宾会 ,This film is an interesting one. It talks about how a playboy falls in love with a girl who has only one-day memory. The scenario is so romantic, but there are still some mistakes in it.
The first time Lucy’s symptom is discussed is when Sue, the café owner, finds Henry is coming back for Lucy again. It appears he has fallen in love with her. She pulls him out where Lucy cannot hear them and told Henry the reason why Lucy cannot remember him. Here is where she makes a mistake. She talks about the accident and said, “She lost her short-term memory”. This is not true. In fact, short-term memory is not defined by “short time”. According to the movie, Lucy does remember everything happened before the car accident, but “she can’t retain any new information”. Every night Lucy sleeps, the memory for the last day is cleared off, so she is living in the day the accident happened forever in her own world.
Here we can see that Lucy has no problem with her short-term memory. Short-term memory is defined as the information in mind which is in an active state. For example, it would be something we are thinking about right now. Say I just wrote down the sentence “…we are thinking about right now”, it would be stored in my short-term memory. After that, when we are not thinking of the issue, it turns to be in our long-term memory. When we need to find it, we can retrieve it from our memory any time we want, but we are not dealing with it at the moment.
The memory for a whole day should certainly be considered as long-term memory, because you cannot think of all the things happened in a day at the same time since short-term memory only has a low capacity. So what Lucy has trouble with is her long-term memory, rather than short-term memory.
However, at least Sue is right about one thing, that long-term memory and short-term memory are controlled by different regions of our brain.
Lucy’s memory loss itself is weird too. If it is true that she cannot remember what happened the day before, her symptom should be absolutely like “ten-second Tom”. That means, it is not likely that her brain is like a computer and restarts itself every night. If the cycle is 24 hours, she should have the memory of what happened during the last day when she wakes up. Also if the problem is she cannot form new memory-actually it is called “anterograde amnesia”-she would remember everything before the accident happens, including the fact that her father and her had already got the pineapple. It is not possible that her memory stopped that morning and waited for the accident to happen.
The second scene in which they talk about Lucy’s memory loss is when they goes to the hospital and meet with the doctor. The doctor says Lucy’s temporal lobe is severely damaged, so Lucy is not able to turn her short-term memory to long-term memory in her sleep.
First, Lucy has no trouble turning short-term memory to long-term memory. Based on the description in the movie, Lucy is able to remember what happens in a whole day, which means she is able to turn short-term memory to long-term memory. What she does not manage to do is to keep long-term memory in her brain for a long time.
Secondly, according to what the doctor says, the process in which we turn our short-term memory to long-term memory happens when we sleep. It is not true either. In fact, we are turning our short-term memory to long-term memory every minute when we need it. It is not correct that our short-term memories pile up during day time and wait to be turned into long-term memory together in sleep.
In addition, if Lucy has severe damage in her temporal lobe, she would have some problem with her emotion and her imagination, since temporal lobe is in charge of these. However, in the movie we can see that she paints on a wall every day, and has not trouble express her emotion. Besides, based on the fact that Lucy’s problem is with her long-term memory, the most likely damaged brain region should actually be hippocampus, which helps people deal with long-term memory.
Speaking of “ten-second Tom”, there is also a mistake with him. The doctor says his memory would last for only 10 seconds. In fact, based on other depiction of Tom’s memory loss, Tom has a problem with long-term memory, too. His trouble is not able to form new memory, neither, just like Lucy. However, 10 seconds is within the capacity of short-term memory. That means if Tom has no problem with short-term memory, he can hold memory for more than 10 seconds for sure. In the movie, when Tom is talking to the group of people, his memory for them is activated, so it is not likely that he would forget introducing himself to them because the memory has not been transferred to long-term memory, Tom should have the memory of them.
At the end of the movie, when Henry comes back to Lucy again, she shows him pictures of him. She tells him that even though she does not know who he is, she dreams about him every night. It is what may happen in real life. In fact, for people who have anterograde amnesia, they are more likely to forget some specific things, instead of everything in a period of time. In most cases, anterograde amnesia patients have difficulty with episodic memory, but they still have intact semantic memory. In the movie, Lucy forgets everything she does with Henry every day, and every time they kiss she thinks it is her first kiss. That is because of her loss of episodic memory. However, she still remembers Henry’s face and is able to draw them. Also as Lucy’s father tells Henry, she always sings the same song on the days she meets Henry. That is possible. Obviously Lucy only sings that song when she is extremely happy, and meeting Henry is the reason that makes her so happy-and that is also why Henry goes back when he realizes what Lucy’s father wants to tell him. It is not because Lucy “remembers” him, but that Lucy loves him even without her awareness. That is all about semantic memory, so even when Lucy’s episodic memory is hurt, it does not influence her emotion and her feeling.

——《初恋》英文观后感

What would it feel if I can wake up everyday forgetting what happened for the last whole year?

What would it feel if I can wake up everyday forgetting what happened for the last whole year?

Lucy in the movie “50 First Dates” told me this feeling. Every morning when she woke up, she only rememberred the Sunday of last year which was her father’s birthday, also the date she had the car accident which made her only keep memory before Sunday, so she always felt happy living the same habit as what she did on Sunday a year ago with the kind set-up by her father and brother. After meeting Henry, she could only remember who he was on the same day. But after one night, he became a stranger to her. She couldn’t even recognize he was the one she used to date and love everyday. Henry tried his best to give her a new different meeting every day so as to win her smile and regain their “First Date”。 Henry made her tapes every morning to help her remember what happened the day before and the last whole year. Lucy thus felt grateful with all she had when she woke up everyday. On the same day, she always had the same deep gratitude to face Henry with her sweet smile.

What a beautiful feeling it is to always feel thanksgiving and to always appreciate each other’s effort. A touching story between a memory lost woman and a devoted man taught all of us, normal people, the essence of love. When two people can thank each other for their devotion everyday like what they did for each other on first date, love can forever be refreshed and energetic. On Lucy’s side, people with memory will ask for more than yesterday and become critical of their partners day by day, while people without memory will feel grateful for their life and the people around them everyday.

In the movie, when one day Lucy decided to break up with Henry to let him rebuild his life by burning all their diaries and tapes, I cried for Henry’s broken heart. For her, it was just one day feeling. For him, it was long-term affection and connection. It was easier for her than him to give up their love. On Henry’s side, people with memory will always remember the past happiness and treasure it for the rest of their life, while people without memory will easily give up at the end of the same day.

What a ruthless feeling it is to end a relationship just after one minute thought. People with fragile mind would easily ruin a long-term relationship no matter what reason they have. The torture between Lucy and Henry tells us the fatal factor to do harm to intimacy between a couple is their fragile mind of balancing emotion and reason. Thus most of couple lose their trust for each other after experiencing this weakly testing broke-up.
